OUR COMPOST BARREL

Hornby has been composting waste collected from local businesses, campgrounds and private individuals since the early 90's. The heart of our system is a ten foot long composting barrel which has two chambers and a receiving tray. At the beginning of each batch, well sorted raw wastes are added to the barrel . Woodshavings from a local mill are added as a bulking agent along with Bercan, a concentrated starter of natural enzymes and microbes, which gives the barrel contents its initial boost. Lime, green sand, rock phosphates and a little forest soil are added the the finished barrel contents before they are added to our gardens.A bucket of the old compost is left in the barrel each time it is emptied so starter is present at the beginning of each new batch.

One turning of the barrel every few days acts like a shoveling over of the entire contents and provides the key ingredient to composting success, aeration!

We add the finished compost to the depot gardens maintained by volunteers.

This garden is filled with hardy herbs and found 'objects d'art' from our freestore. Our herb garden

Because of the many deer on our Island, we need to fence most gardens in order that the tender plants survive. This garden, which features a living fence made of willow, is a testament to the wonders of compost.
